For more than a decade, I’ve been known online as “The Captain”—a persona born from an inside joke, which has grown into what it is today: ten books, thousands of posts, and tons of laughs, realizations, and memories.
I joined the electrician's union in 2000. Soon after I was given the nickname Grape Ape. There are people in that organization who still don't know my real name. And I like that. I have used that name as a "handle" on a lot of forums. Hell it is part of my email address that I have had for over 20 years. I made friends online who I have since met in person over the years. To many it has been shortened to Grape. I retire next February at 55 1/2 yrs old. And I too have been thinking of a name change. But how I am sure close friends will still call me Grape. But how to remove the rest. Now I read this and it is an even bigger question how. Not rebrand just get rid of that. 25 years of life has been tied to that nickname. Keep us posted as to your success and the issues you find after a decade. I am sure it will help me in my future unbranding.
Onward to the next adventure! We all change over time, based on our life adventures and the people we interact with. I have truly enjoyed “The Captain”, but am excited to see where your journey takes you. Take a break from the writing if needed- avoid burnout.
I kid you not , I’m on the same page not as far as identity in a name but careers in general . I have felt this way for a bit but not sure how to move beyond it . I think sometimes doing things for oneself instead of others helps but it doesn’t pay the dumb ass bills. Some days I want to quit it all move and start fresh . Living in the Bay Area for the past 25 years is not for the faint of heart , it’s hard to survive . But I’ve done it … crap going down a rabbit hole . I’ll leave it there and look forward to chatting with you the end of the month .
Honored to have purchased the last “Captain” Book presale and thank you for sharing all your insights and truths with the world . Because of you, maybe we all can start tossing titles and old beliefs overboard !
Congratulations on evolving into your new self! It's not easy, but be brave and let the world see that you can be a better version of yourself than you were before.
I have followed you for years, and I’m happy to hear this for you. I have often wondered what else you were working on. I will be ordering your book right now
How exciting! Looking forward to your new journey! I, too have re-invented myself the last year...purchasing two goats and keeping them at a friend's farm not far from where I live. I moved to rural Earlville, Illinois recently. Adopted two ducklings yesterday (they will also go to the farm). I'm going to be 61 in a few weeks and finally living out a childhood dream of 'being a farmer' (of sorts!) You just never know where life will take you if you just take that ONE step. A few years ago I didn't even want to be on this earth anymore and now here I am - LIVING LIFE and LOVING it.
I will always be grateful to you, your posts and inspiration that literally kept me going during some really dark days a few years ago. I still drink coffee from my Captain mug ("I like my mornings to be slow and quiet...")
Whatever you decide to do, I will be looking forward to seeing it/reading about it.
Wishing you peace, love & happiness always ~ Laura
I love reading your posts, stories, perceptions- I agree with every thing you just said. Although I selfishly would like you to continue, I understand and am happy for you

FKA “The Capt” 😭😭 what an exciting chapter to end and an even more exciting chapter to begin! I can’t wait to see what Kyle Creek does.
Thank you.

Appreciate the support.
I dug the moniker but being true to oneself is the key to happiness, so seize whatever grabs your heart right now! Mel
Nobody will ever take a novel seriously if it's written by "The Captain." Not even me.
Excited for you!
Well written as always. Excited for what’s to come for/from you!

Vaya con Dios !
I'm not going anywhere; I'm just no longer going to cage myself into an old moniker.
You have people that believe in you no matter what your name is. Kyle Creek is a strong name for a man with strong character. Always Forward!
Kyle Creek > The Captain
I appreciate the support.
Keep writing and I look forward to seeing what's next for you.
Thank you. Me too.
